MS Dhoni To Return As Captain, Ruturaj Gaikwad Ruled Out Of IPL 2025

GUWAHATI: In a development that is sure to excite fans, CSK legend MS Dhoni will resume captaincy duties for the remainder of the IPL 2025. This comes as captain Ruturaj Gaikwad has been sidelined for the rest of the season due to an elbow fracture.

Head Coach Stephen Fleming confirmed the news during a press conference on Thursday, just a day ahead of the team's home fixture against the Kolkata Knight Riders. “Ruturaj Gaikwad has been ruled out of the IPL due to an elbow fracture. MS Dhoni will step in as captain,” Fleming stated.

He also noted that while the team is considering replacement options, no final decision has been made yet. “We have a few alternatives within the squad, but haven’t settled on anyone. Dhoni was ready and fully understood the need to step in,” Fleming added.

Dhoni, one of the most successful captains in IPL history, has led Chennai Super Kings in 235 matches and guided them to five title wins — in 2010, 2011, 2018, 2021, and 2023.

Leadership changes have been a recurring theme in recent years for CSK. In 2022, Ravindra Jadeja was appointed captain but Dhoni had to retake the role mid-season following a string of disappointing results. Ahead of the 2024 season, Dhoni passed the leadership baton to Gaikwad in what was seen as a move toward grooming the next generation.

Currently, CSK are struggling near the bottom of the points table, with just one win in their first five matches. They recently suffered their heaviest home defeat in 18 IPL seasons at the hands of Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
