Dispur Police arrested one of the most wanted fraudsters in the state, Nilim Dutta (37), on Saturday night from Juripar, Six Mile area. Dutta has been known to dupe several hotel, automobile and real estate businessmen in the city and often would claim to be a high-ranking official of Union home ministry while committing his crimes. The police also apprehended his sister, Smita Dutta (26), and their maid, Janoiki Boro, for helping him in the crimes. "He claimed to be the director of Strategic Research and Analysis Organisation and a researcher on Bodoland from the Union home ministry. Over the last two years, he stayed in at least four city-based hotels and duped them. While he owes at least Rs one lakh to two hotels of Paltan Bazar, another hotel in Dispur is to get around Rs 3.5 lakh from Dutta," said a policeman at Dispur police station. Nilim Dutta also checked in one of the hotels on February 18 and stayed till October 16 last year and then left without paying the bill, his room locked. He racked up a bill worth Rs. 5, 48,274 but Dutta paid only Rs 1, 96,000 and said that his office would pay the rest. He then escaped the hotel. Dutta has been served with sections 420, 406 and 522 of the IPC. "This is not all. He also cheated his house-owner by giving him a fake cheque. He duped another man from whom he bought a vehicle in a similar way. Then he again started living with his sister and the maid at an apartment in Juripar area recently. Though he was supposed to pay Rs 20,000 to his new house owner, he again fooled him with a cheque that bounced later," added the police official to a media house.
