Morigaon Poised To Become Assam's Next Industrial & Investment Hub

Assam expects to secure investments and infrastructure projects worth ₹1.5 lakh crore from the upcoming Advantage Assam 2.0: Investment and Infrastructure Summit. The state government is confident that the summit will attract investments exceeding ₹1 lakh crore, alongside infrastructure projects valued at over ₹50,000 crore, largely supported by the central government.

In the first Advantage Assam summit held in 2018, around 209 MoUs were signed, but only about 25% were converted into agreements. This time, the government is taking a stricter approach to MoU signings. Private investment proposals, including those for road and bridge projects, will be welcomed but will undergo stringent scrutiny by the state cabinet. Large-scale announcements may be made, but the priority is to ensure that all investments materialise. Unlike other investment summits where MoUs are signed first and reviewed later, Assam will follow a reverse approach—ensuring cabinet approval before any agreement is finalised.

A senior official from the Industry and Commerce Department told GPlus, “Every district is expected to receive some investment, but Morigaon and its adjacent areas will be the main focus for investors.” The official cited the upcoming semiconductor project by the Tatas in Morigaon as a major catalyst for industrial growth in the region, attracting ancillary industries looking to set up operations nearby.

A local businessman from Morigaon remarked, “Morigaon will become the Mumbai of Assam.”

Speaking to GPlus, Morigaon District Commissioner Devasish Sharma stated, “Advantage Assam is rolling out the red carpet for investors. As of now, we have two investment proposals—one from a cement company planning a ₹500 crore investment and another cement industry with Rs 839 crore. During Advantage Assam, investment in Morigaon alone is expected to reach around ₹2,000 crore. And this is just the beginning—more will follow after the summit.”

Sharma added that the district has already acquired 1,000 bighas of land for an industrial park, and the Public Works Department (PWD) has been assigned the task of developing the site. During Advantage Assam, this area will be showcased to potential investors.

Moreover, a satellite township is being developed near the semiconductor unit. The Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) will present its integrated satellite township project at Advantage Assam 2.0. Assam's first satellite township is being developed on the site of the defunct Nagaon Paper Mill in Morigaon's Jagiroad. This township will accommodate employees from the semiconductor unit and other industries emerging in the area. According to a GMDA source, while the detailed project report is yet to be approved, the township is expected to transform the district.

With the semiconductor unit coming up, a major shift in the local mindset is visible. “People now understand the importance of ancillary industries,” said Sharma. “We have seen inquiries from investors across various sectors, from hospitals to schools. More investment proposals are coming in regularly.”

A senior official from the Industry and Commerce Department stated, “We expect investments across all districts of Assam, but Morigaon is likely to attract the most.” All district commissioners have been directed to promote their districts to investors by highlighting their unique opportunities. The official emphasised that investments across various sectors are welcome, and district industry and commerce centres have been instructed to facilitate even small investors during Advantage Assam.

Locals in Morigaon have already noticed a sharp rise in land and real estate values. District Commissioner Sharma noted, “Now is the best time to invest in Morigaon.”

Beyond industry, Morigaon is also expecting investments in agriculture.

“Today, around 60-65% of our population depends on agriculture. When we talk about vegetables, most think of Kharupetia. But Morigaon is not far behind—we produce about 10-15% less than Kharupetia.  Morigaon is also a vegetable hub,” said Sharma.

The district exports pumpkins, watermelons, capsicums, muskmelons, apple pears, and maize. Maize production and exports have gained traction recently, with maize worth ₹1.08 crore exported to Delhi, Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad in 2024-25.

Recently, the district administration allocated land to two youths for capsicum production. Similar initiatives are being taken to support investors in the agriculture sector.

Sharma also highlighted Morigaon’s role in fish production. “If you travel seven kilometre ahead of Morigaon, towards Lahori Ghat and Moirabari, you’ll find numerous fish farms. These fisheries supply rare fish varieties across Assam. The market share is significant—it’s the biggest in the state.”

The district administration has identified suitable land for various crops and implemented soil health card initiatives to guide farmers. Maize farming, in particular, has gained commercial viability, with farmers shifting to it for higher yields and profitability. Even maize silage is being used as animal fodder, enhancing its economic value.

While maize farming won’t completely replace traditional agriculture, it has had a significant impact on the district’s economy. “Previously, fields used to be waterlogged. Now, those same areas are being cultivated productively,” Sharma explained.

Morigaon is also witnessing the rise of organised farming through farmer production companies. These cooperatives are making agriculture more structured and investor-friendly.

The physical progress of the semiconductor project in Jagiroad is on track, with the first round of recruitments completed. Currently, 500 girls from Morigaon are undergoing training for jobs in the semiconductor unit.

With the semiconductor industry, an upcoming industrial park, a planned satellite township, and growing agricultural opportunities, Morigaon is poised for rapid transformation. If current trends continue, the district could become a larger economic hub than even Guwahati in the coming years.
