Milder Winter Expected Across India This Year Due To El Nino

GUWAHATI: In a recent announcement, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasted a less severe winter for most parts of India from December to February. The prediction is attributed to the ongoing influence of El Nino and various local factors, resulting in above-normal minimum and maximum temperatures.

El Nino, a natural climate phenomenon characterised by elevated temperatures, is typically declared when sea surface temperatures in the tropical eastern Pacific rise by at least 0.5 degrees Celsius above the long-term average. These events occur irregularly at intervals ranging from two to seven years.

While a milder winter may be welcomed by many, it raises concerns, particularly for rabi crops, with wheat being a notable example. The warmer-than-usual winter months could impact standing crops, adding a layer of complexity to an agricultural landscape already facing challenges.

Speaking to GPlus, Sanjay Shaw, a scientist at IMD, Guwahati confirmed the impending rising temperatures and its effect on the nation's weather.
