GUWHATI: Denis Law, a noted figure in the history of Manchester United, has passed away at the age of 84, his family confirmed on Friday, January 17. Law’s family announced his passing in a heartfelt statement, describing his battle with dementia, a condition he revealed in 2021. "It is with a heavy heart that we tell you our father Denis Law has sadly passed away. He fought a tough battle but is now at peace," the family said. They expressed gratitude to those who supported him throughout his life, adding that the love and care he received were deeply appreciated.

Born in Aberdeen, Scotland, Law’s football career began at Huddersfield Town before he had spells at Manchester City and Italian side Torino. However, it was at Manchester United where he cemented his legendary status, making 404 appearances and scoring 237 goals between 1962 and 1973. His scoring prowess helped United secure two league titles in 1965 and 1967, an FA Cup in 1963, and the European Cup in 1968, the first won by an English club. Although injury sidelined him from the European final, Law’s contribution to United’s success was immeasurable.

Affectionately called "The Lawman," he was also the second British player to win the prestigious Ballon d’Or in 1964, recognising his talent. His 46 goals in the 1963-64 season remain a single-season record for Manchester United.

Law earned 54 caps for Scotland, scoring 30 goals, a record matched only by Kenny Dalglish but achieved in nearly half the games. He represented Scotland at the 1974 World Cup, playing in the nation’s opening victory over Zaire before retiring from football later that year.

Manchester United paid tribute, stating, "Everyone at Manchester United is mourning the loss of Denis Law, the King of the Stretford End. With 237 goals in 404 appearances, he will always be celebrated as one of the club's greatest and most beloved players. His flair, spirit, and love for the game made him a hero of his generation. Our deepest condolences go out to his family."

After retiring, Law continued to contribute to football as a TV pundit and presenter. In 2003, he overcame prostate cancer and was awarded a CBE in 2016 for his services to football and charity.
