Man commits Suicide in Guwahati fearing non-inclusion in NRC

A man in Pandu suspected to have committed suicide fearing non-inclusion in the National Register of Citizen that is being updated in Assam based on the electoral roll after March 31, 1971.

Identified as Ratan Rai, an employee of Inland Water Transport Authority, was noticed to be mentally disturbed, family members told Police. Rai, 40, was a resident of Pandu colony no 4.

"The deceased's family members were not at home this afternoon. He took their absence as an opportunity to take this step," Police said. Rai allegedly hung himself with a rope to end his life.

Police further revealed that on interrogating his family members, they said that the symptoms of anxiety came after the first draft of NRC was published on January 1 this year.

While the second draft of the NRC is yet to be published, a general fear psychosis has gripped the state.
