GUWAHATI: A comprehensive eviction drive was executed on Tuesday in the Mandia Bazar area of Barpeta District, Assam. The drive, prompted by a directive from the Public Works Department (PWD), aimed to reclaim land that had been unlawfully occupied, as per reports.
The initiation of the eviction process dates back six months when notices were issued by the Circle Officer of Barghbar circle, urging occupants to voluntarily vacate the land. Despite the initial notices, certain individuals refused to comply, necessitating a more forceful intervention, according to media reports.
Responding to a formal request from the PWD, the Circle Officer of Baghbar circle orchestrated the eviction drive, mobilising heavy machinery, including JCBs, to dismantle several structures. The PWD sought the assistance of the district administration to reclaim the land that had been encroached upon.
Law enforcement officers were reportedly present during the operation to ensure order and safety. The eviction aimed to free up the land for public use in accordance with directives from relevant departments.
