GUWAHATI: The Election Commission of India has declared the immediate enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) following the announcement of the election schedule. The MCC provisions will apply to all states and union territories, encompassing candidates, political parties, and the respective governments.

Elaborate arrangements have been put in place by the Commission to ensure the effective implementation of MCC guidelines. Any violation of these guidelines will be strictly dealt with, and the Commission emphasises that all political parties, contesting candidates, and their agents must familiarise themselves with the instructions to prevent misunderstandings or misinterpretations. The state and union territory governments have been directed to prevent any misuse of official machinery or positions during the MCC period.

Additionally, the Commission has issued instructions for swift, effective, and stringent action for the enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct during the first 72 hours following the announcement of the election schedule. Special emphasis has been placed on maintaining extra vigilance and strict enforcement actions during the last 72 hours before the close of polls. These instructions have been provided in the form of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for compliance by the field election machinery.
