Lockdown Violators to be Booked Under IPC Sections 269, 270

GUWAHATI: Police personnel have been asked to keep strict check on violators of lockdown, stated Assam DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta.

Those found violating the lockdown protocols will be charged under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections 269/70 apart from the charges under the Disaster Managemnt Act.

As per IPC section 269, violators could be awarded upto six months of jail, or fine or both.

Further, under section 270 of IPC punishment could be upto 2 years, or fine or both. Both sections are noncognisable.

The same punishment will also be applicable on citizens who fail to wear mask in public.

The DGP further added that people found spitting or urinating will also be charged under the same sections apart from being fined Rs. 1000 by the Gauhati Municipal Corporation (GMC) and charges under the Disaster Management Act.

Emphasis was put on restricting people from commuting without ID cards stating that ID card/ authorisation letters must be given to all employees by the organizations.

On the other hand, police officials have been asked not to harass any health workers. 

"Anyone found doing so under any circumstance will be held responsible and dealt with accordingly. We have zero tolerance policy in this regard," Mahanta said.
