GUWAHATI: Liverpool have secured their 20th English league title, matching Manchester United’s record, after defeating Tottenham Hotspur 5-1 at Anfield, on Sunday, April 27.

The triumph also marked a historic debut season for Arne Slot, who became the first Liverpool manager to win the championship in his first year at the club.

An early setback was witnessed when Dominic Solanke headed Spurs into the lead after 12 minutes. Liverpool responded quickly as Luis Díaz’s equaliser was confirmed following a VAR review, and Alexis Mac Allister’s powerful strike in the 23rd minute put the hosts ahead. Cody Gakpo extended Liverpool’s advantage before the interval, effectively securing the result.

The second half unfolded as a celebratory affair at Anfield. Mohamed Salah added Liverpool’s fourth goal, bringing his league tally to 28 for the season. An own goal by Tottenham’s Destiny Udogie, while trying to intercept Salah, compounded Spurs' struggles, allowing Liverpool to round off a commanding performance.

Liverpool’s dominance throughout the campaign had suggested a title victory was imminent, especially following Arsenal’s draw with Crystal Palace on April 24. That result left Slot’s team requiring only one point from their final five matches, a target they achieved with four games to spare. The title win also ended Manchester City’s four-year run as Premier League champions.

This success levels Liverpool with Manchester United at 20 top-flight championships each. It also stands in contrast to their 2019-20 title win, which was celebrated behind closed doors due to the Covid-19 pandemic. A trophy parade has been planned for Monday, May 26, with the possibility of Jürgen Klopp attending, acknowledging his role in building much of the current squad.
