GUWAHATI: The Assam Government is undertaking discussions to increase the Circle Rate of land, a rate that hasn’t been changed for a decade now.
Talking to the media, Assam Chief Minister (CM) Himanta Biswa Sarma recently said that a discussion is on and the Government is thinking about increasing the Circle Rate of land. “The Circle Rate has remained constant for the past 10 years, so it needs to be increased as people buy as per the rate,” said the CM.
According to him, if both buyer and seller agree to register the land at a lower rate, the Government has no objection. But revenue will be charged as per the Government's Circle Rate. The stamp duty will also be calculated on the basis of the Circle Rate.
The CM informed that one of the main objectives of increasing the rate was to help farmers who get very low rates during government land acquisition.
“When the Circle Rate is higher, people will be benefitted during acquisition. Many government projects need land and so if the Circle Rates had been good, people would have got more money. For development projects land will be required, so we will increase the Circle Rate so that people will get more for their lands,” said CM Sarma.
