Labour Party Wins UK General Election After 14 Years, Keir Starmer Ousts Rishi Sunak As PM

GUWAHATI: Keir Starmer’s Labour Party has secured an emphatic victory in the UK general election, unseating Rishi Sunak’s Conservative government with the most decisive win by any party in the 21st century. This landmark result marks Labour’s return to power for the first time since 2010.

At 4:30 am, Sunak conceded defeat following a lacklustre campaign that failed to bridge a longstanding deficit in the polls. His party polled around 22.3%, a sharp decline from the 42.4% achieved in 2019, resulting in the Conservatives' worst performance in three centuries.

Starmer, a former human rights lawyer from Southwark, has risen from relative political obscurity to become the UK's Prime Minister. Since taking over Labour leadership in 2020, he has transformed the party from its worst electoral defeat to a commanding victory.

Starmer’s campaign focused on addressing everyday concerns like the cost of living, public services, and crime. Labour’s share of the vote increased to 36.3%, a modest rise from the previous election but enough to secure a commanding lead due to the Conservative vote's steep decline.
