GUWAHATI: The 6th Convocation of Krishna Kanta Handiqui State Open University (KKHSOU) took place at the University Auditorium in the City Campus, Khanapara, Guwahati on March 5.

The Governor of Assam and Chancellor of the University, Gulab Chand Kataria, presided over the ceremony, conferring degrees upon the awardees. Professor Sushma Yadava, Pro Vice-Chancellor of the Central University of Haryana, attended the occasion as the Chief Guest.
A total of 10,880 degrees, diplomas, and certificates were awarded, with 13 learners receiving a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree, 13 attaining an MPhil degree, 5464 conferred with Undergraduate degrees, 5322 receiving Postgraduate degrees, and 68 learners awarded Postgraduate Diplomas. Notably, 49% of the awardees were female learners.
The convocation witnessed the presentation of Gold Medals to 28 learners for their academic achievements. Additionally, two senior-most learners, Chandra Prabha Mahanta (75 years old) and Mahendra Bhuyan (72 years old), received their Undergraduate and Postgraduate degrees, respectively. Seven jail inmates, completing academic programs from the University, were recognized, with one inmate from Guwahati Central Jail attending the convocation in person.
The Chief Guest, Sushma Yadava, praised the University's efforts in implementing the National Education Policy 2020 and stressed the incorporation of the Indian Knowledge System into the curriculum. Emphasising the importance of Open and Distance Learning, she commended the University for breaking down barriers related to resources, position, and costs.
Chancellor Gulab Chand Kataria commended KKHSOU for significantly contributing to expanding higher education in the state, representing 11% of total enrollment. He lauded the University for providing education to a large female population, aligning with its motto of 'Education Beyond Barriers.'
