After scoring 77 runs against Punjab Kings, Kohli talked to reporters and joked, " I know my name is now attached to just promoting the game in different parts of the world when it comes to T20 cricket. I’ve still got it I guess.”

“I don’t play for these Caps anymore. That’s the promise I can give here — I’ll keep turning up and keep trying me best,” he further added.

The exchange of opinions reportedly commenced when former England cricketer turned commentator, Kevin Pietersen, during commentary for the Gujarat Titans vs. Mumbai Indians match, suggested that the T20 World Cup, slated to take place in the USA, could use players like Kohli to make the game more popular.

Pietersen stated, "The World Cup is happening in the USA. India is playing Pakistan in New York. You'd want someone like a Virat Kohli to help the game grow."

But Shastri disagreed, saying winning was more important than growing the game. He mentioned India's 2007 T20 World Cup win with a young team, reports stated.

Kohli's performance for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) against Punjab Kings added fuel to the talk about whether he should play in the T20 World Cup.

Kohli’s batting helped RCB win by 4 wickets on March 25.
