GUWAHATI: Israel’s cabinet is set to meet on Thursday, January 16, to approve a ceasefire and hostage release agreement with Hamas in Gaza, raising hopes for a temporary end to 15 months of conflict.

The deal, which includes an initial six-week truce, is expected to begin on Sunday, January 19.

The agreement has been welcomed by many Palestinians and families of Israeli hostages. However, fighting has not stopped for now, with Gaza’s civil defence agency reporting at least 20 Palestinian deaths since the deal was announced last evening.

The ceasefire has been considered a diplomatic achievement, but ultimately, it does not signal an end to the broader, century-long Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Tensions between both sides escalated on October 7, 2023, when Hamas launched a major attack on southern Israel, killing around 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages into Gaza.

The assault triggered a large-scale Israeli offensive in return, during which more than 46,000 Palestinians have reportedly been killed, according to Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry.
