The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has geared up for the upcoming 2021 assembly elections in Assam. But this time it seems as if the saffron party might snub its allies of the last five years.
The BJP led government, since the past few days, is seen to be leaving no stone unturned to woo the Bodo people and its members are also starting to eye a contest from Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) ruled bastions. Moreover, the BJP led government, for a few days now, has also been stressing on completing the deferred Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) elections by December this year.
A highly placed source in the BJP talking to G Plus said, “It is possible that the BJP is stressing on BTC elections before or by December so that the Hagrama Mohilary led BPF is jolted by the election and the BJP’s popularity grows in the Bodo Territorial Region (BTR).
The source revealed that if even a few seats during the 2021 Assam elections come to BJP in BTR, it will be proved that the BJP will not have to depend always on an alliance with the BPF. There are also new parties coming in BTR who, on performed well, might seal another alliance with the BJP.
Also, around 15 to 20 sitting BJP MLAs (member of legislative assembly) might not contest from the same constituencies from where they won the last elections. Rather, they might contest from areas where Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) used to win.
The source expressed that there are chances that the BJP state president Ranjeet Kumar Dass might not contest from Sorbhog and instead he might be contesting from Patacharkuchi.
On enquiring why Dass would take such a decision, the BJP source said that in the last elections Ranjeet Kumar Dass received 56,454 votes which 33.33% of the total voters in Sorbhog. The Congress received 36,928, AIUDF – 17,504 and the CPI (M) which is the left received 29,082.
So together, the three parties got far more votes than what BJP’s Dass did in the last elections.
Similarly, all the constituencies have been thoroughly analyzed and accordingly, tickets will be allotted to the candidates.
It is also being calculated that after the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) launched its party the AGP might not perform well during the elections. Therefore, important leaders of AGP might be persuaded to join BJP to contest elections and there might not be any alliance at all between AGP and BJP for 2021 assembly elections.
