GUWAHATI: Instagram is reportedly exploring the launch of a separate app for its short-form video feature, Reels, according to remarks made by the platform’s chief, Adam Mosseri. The move comes as parent company Meta looks to capitalise on the uncertain future of Tik-Tok in the United States.

Meta executives have been considering making Reels an independent platform, a strategy that could help the company streamline resources and differentiate its services. The development follows ongoing scrutiny of Tik-Tok in the US, where concerns over data security and its Chinese ownership continue to raise regulatory challenges. The Biden administration had expressed concerns over the app’s operations, with calls for Tik-Tok to be acquired by an American company still persisting.

Meta has also been expanding its focus on video-editing tools, having recently introduced Edits, a new app designed to compete with ByteDance-owned CapCut.

Earlier, Reels has gained traction in markets such as India, where TikTok is banned, and demand for short-form content remains high. While Meta previously attempted a similar approach with the now-defunct Lasso app, the company appears determined to solidify Reels as a major competitor.
