India's First Export Train To Nepal Rolls Out

GUWAHATI: The first export cargo container train, carrying sponge iron, is set to embark on its journey from the Indian Custom Yard Railway station, as per an announcement on December 27.

The train, loaded with consignments from M/S TATA Sponge Iron Ltd., located at Murga Mahadev Road under Chakradharpur division of South Eastern Railway, will be transported to M/S Pashupati Iron and Steel Pvt Ltd. in Birat Nagar, Nepal, by Container Corporation of India Ltd. (CONCOR).

The consignment will travel from the Indian Custom Yard Railway station to Nepal via trucks, passing through the customs Integrated Check Post at Jogbani.

This connectivity is a result of the Jogbani - Biratnagar international cross-border rail link project, inaugurated by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Nepalese Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda' on June 1, 2023.

The earlier flagged-off cargo train from Bathnaha in Bihar was a key component of this project.

This railway link not only strengthens bilateral ties between the two nations but also opens avenues for economic growth.

Nepal, being a landlocked country, gains direct rail access to Indian seaports, offering a cost-effective and efficient mode of transportation.

Previously reliant on roadways for transportation, rail connectivity is expected to significantly reduce logistic costs for Nepal.
