The validation firing, carried out on Monday, May 5, with reduced explosive charge, was undertaken in coordination with the Naval Science & Technological Laboratory (NSTL), Visakhapatnam—DRDO’s premier lab for naval systems—along with the High Energy Materials Research Laboratory, Pune, and the Terminal Ballistics Research Laboratory, Chandigarh. MIGM has been specifically designed to counter modern stealth ships and submarines.
Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh congratulated DRDO, the Indian Navy, and the production partners for the mine’s development. He said the system would bolster the Navy’s undersea warfare capabilities.
Meanwhile, DRDO Chairman and Secretary of the Department of Defence R&D, Dr Samir V Kamat, added that the system is now ready for induction into the Indian Navy following the successful validation trial.
The operational readiness of the Indian Navy has been further demonstrated by the recent test firing of a Medium-Range Surface-to-Air Missile (MRSAM) from India’s latest indigenous warship, INS Surat. The missile system, developed jointly by India and Israel, successfully intercepted a fast, low-flying sea-skimming target in the Arabian Sea on Thursday, April 24.
