India-Set Documentary ‘To Kill A Tiger’ Earns Oscar Nomination

The film ‘To Kill a Tiger’ was announced as an official contender for an Oscar in the Best Documentary Feature category yesterday on January 23, as per the nominations released on the official website of the Oscars. 

The film is directed by Nisha Pahuja, an India-born Canadian filmmaker, and produced by David Oppenheim, Cornelia Principe and Andy Cohen. It also has Dev Patel, Mindy Kaling, Rupi Kaur and Atul Gawande as the executive producers. 

The story is based in India and revolves around a Ranjit, a farmer in Jharkhand, India, who takes on the fight of his life and campaigns for justice for his 13-year-old daughter, Kiran, who was sexually assaulted by three men in 2017. 

Last year in 2023, ‘The Elephant Whisperers’, a short documentary directed by Kaartiki Gonsalez, had won an Oscar in the Best Documentary (Short Subject) category, alongside the popular RRR song ‘Naatu Naatu’, which won in the Best Original Song category.
