GUWAHATI: By next year in 2025, footwear will soon be available in India as per Indian sizing system, N Kalaiselvi, the director general of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), told media on earlier this week.

Currently, footwear in India is only available according to US, UK or EU sizes, but the Central Leather Research Institute (CLRI) under CSIR, has reportedly finished its pan-India feet scanning survey and has submitted the final report to the Bureau of Indian Standards, as per reports.

“Over 1 lakh people from across 73 districts of India, within the age group of 5 to 55 have been surveyed and the report has been submitted to BIS. We will be able to launch the Indian footwear sizing system by 2025,” Kalaiselvi said during her visit to CLRI.

The CLRI will now focus on creating and developing footwear to meet the health care needs of people of India, including patients suffering from orthopedic, diabetes and hormonal imbalance related problems, in consultation with doctors and physiotherapists from the country.

“Indians have wider feet, so while creating the sizing system along with length, we have also taken width of the feet into account,” the CLRI director KJ Sreeram said in a statement to media.

The CLRI director further revealed that user trials for new footwear sizes will soon begin on 10,000 people for next 18 months, after which footwear with Indian sizes will be made available in market.
