The index, published by Germanwatch, the New Climate Institute, and Climate Action Network International, evaluates nations based on emissions, renewable energy deployment, and climate policies. India's strong performance has been attributed to its low per-capita emissions and rapid adoption of renewable energy.
The report further highlighted that the nation is unlikely to see significant shifts in its climate policies. Instead, it is expected to maintain or intensify its growth-oriented approach to climate action, driven by rising energy demands from its expanding industrial sector and population.
The CCPI, which also includes the European Union in its assessment, monitors 90% of global emissions. Notably, the first three spots remain vacant as no country achieved a “very high” rating across all categories.
In a related development, India has also called on developed nations to strengthen their support for climate adaptation in poorer countries. During the ongoing Conference of the Parties (COP) 29, at a high-level ministerial dialogue on adaptation, Indian negotiator Rajasree Ray emphasised that as of right now, developing nations are disproportionately bearing the brunt of climate change caused by historical emissions of wealthier countries.
