IAS Officer Arrested in Rs 2250 crores Social Welfare Scam

Assam police has arrested an IAS officer Kumud Kalita in connection with Rs 2250 crore scam in Social Welfare department of the state.

Absconding IAS officer Kumud Chandra Kalita, an accused in the multi-crore-rupee Social Welfare scam, was arrested by sleuths of the Vigilance & Anti Corruption directorate on December 8. Official sources said Kalita was arrested from near the Gauhati High Court where he had apparently come to surrender. He is likely to be produced before the court today.

Earlier, Assam police announced a cash reward of Rs 1 lakh to anyone who can provide information leading to missing IAS officer Kumud Kalita. Kumud Kalita had served as the director of the department.

The IAS officer was suspended on charges of corruption. Fifty-eight-year-old Kalita had been absconding since February 28 last year and evading arrest. He has been charge sheeted in the crime.

The vigilance and anti corruption had already accused 11 persons in the case.

Financial irregularities relating to implementation of the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) and Supplementary Nutrition Programme in the State in the last ten/twelve years were detected by the investigators probing the scam.
