Hurricane Milton Hits Florida Weakening To Category 3, Multiple Dead As Millions Stranded

GUWAHATI: Hurricane Milton, initially a powerful Category 5 storm, struck Florida as a Category 3 hurricane on Wednesday morning before weakening to a Category 2. Despite the downgrade, the storm remains highly dangerous. U.S. President Joe Biden has warned that Hurricane Milton could become one of the most devastating hurricanes to hit Florida in over a century.

The storm made landfall around four hours ago near Siesta Key, bringing destructive 120 mph (205 km/h) winds, along with a "life-threatening" storm surge and flooding. Though the hurricane has weakened to a Category 2 as it continues to move across Florida, it still poses a significant threat.

Several fatalities have been reported at a leisure resort in St. Lucie County on Florida's east coast, though the exact number remains unclear. Meanwhile, more than 2 million homes and businesses are without power, with entire neighbourhoods plunged into darkness. The storm triggered mass evacuations, with millions fleeing the state in advance of Milton's landfall, just two weeks after Category 4 Hurricane Helene hit Florida’s northern region.
