GUWAHATI: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday received flak from the public across social media platforms for describing Assam's floods as a "flood-like situation."

In the tweet Shah wrote, "On account of the heavy rains, a flood-like situation has occurred in Assam. Spoke with Assam CM Shri @himantabiswa Ji about the ongoing situation. The NDRF and the SDRF are working on a war footing, providing relief and rescuing the victims. PM Shri @narendramodi Ji stands firmly with the people of Assam and is committed to providing all possible assistance to the state in these challenging times."

According to the latest flood report, this year at least 58 people have lost their lives in the deluge and lakhs are affected.

Several users criticised the Home Minister for the tweet.

"Flood like? Flood like? Flood like? From floods to flood like #assam you've sure come a long way man! #SahiHain," commented a user.

Another user wrote, "Respected, At present around 24.5 lakh people are affected in Assam and sir, do you think this is a flood like situation? This is not a new situation in Assam, every year lakhs of people are affected by floods but till now no one has taken any good step for this situation.(big 0)"

Responding to the situation, Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi said, "it shows a lack of knowledge and sincerity as more than 70 people have lost their lives due to the deluge."

"The statement of Minister of Home Affairs Shri Amit Shah regarding the tragedy in Assam shows a lack of knowledge and sincerity. More than 70 people have died due to the floods yet the Minister chooses to describe the current disaster as flood-like situation," the Congress MP wrote on 'X'.

It is to be mentioned that Shah in a previous tweet in 2023 had made the same “flood- like situation" remark.

It is also to be noted that an eight-year-old boy  lost his life in Guwahati after being swept away by gushing water  in  a drain following heavy rain.

The flood situation in Assam is critical with over 23 lakh people people reeling under waters as the Brahmaputra continues to flow over the danger level.
