Though the Paschim Guwahati Nagarik Sajagota Mancha has welcomed the state government’s decision to shift the proposed landing site of the northern arm of the Bharalumukh road overbridge (ROB) from TR Phukan Road to MG Road, but the decision is yet to be finalised. Though it is finalised that the Bharalumukh will get a Y-shape road overbridge, the landing of one of the three ends of the bridge is yet to be decided.
A source in PWD said, “It is finalised that the two lane ROB will start from near sluice gate at Bharalumukh. The other end will either land at Machkhowa near TR Phukan Park or at AT Road or at MG Road,” adding that a feasibility study is ongoing and the decision will be taken looking at public convenience.
The ROB will have an arm from Bharalumukh point till the end of Sonaram field. It will be an intermediate lane of 350 meters. So the starting of the ROB at sluice gate is decided, the arm landing crossing Sonaram field is decided and the only pending decision is the landing point at MG Road or TR Phukan Road or AT Road.
Bharalumukh residents were upset with the proposal to cut down more than 70 trees in the area for the purpose, mostly near the slice gate. The PWD source said that only seven to eight trees will have to be cut and the residents have accepted the proposal.
The source said, “The objective of the road overbridge at Bharalumukh is to resolve the traffic congestion caused due to the railway crossing,” adding that the cost of the ROB project will be shared in a ratio of 50:50 by both the railways and the state government. The approximate budget of the project is ₹99 crore.
