In multiple incidents it has been reported that people of Guwahati have been getting calls from suspected numbers where the person on the other end claims to be an agent of State Bank of India and asks for customers' ATM and PAN card details.
Cases have also been reported till date, where the customers fell prey to the calls and lost money from their bank accounts.
Reportedly, the Chief Information Commissioner (CIC) of Assam, Himangshu Shekhar had also received one such call from the number - 7763944097, at 11:59 AM, on 13th February. The caller who spoke to the Commissioner in Hindi language claimed that Shekhar's ATM card has turned dysfunctional due to some document related issues, which could be altered only if he provides the caller with his ATM and PAN card number. The caller who claimed to have called from Delhi Head Office however refrained from providing Shekhar any of his personal or professional details.
Later when Shekhar traced the call, it came to light that the phone call was made from Yashpur Nagar of Madhya Pradesh.
The CIC has already forwarded the matter in written to the City Commissioner and urged the Dept to take necessary preventions against such incidents.
