Guwahati Plans To Change School Timings From June Due To Excessive Heat

Guwahati city in the Kamrup Metropolitan district is set to change school timings from June, following the example of Assam’s Jorhat district, which recently adjusted school schedules due to rising temperatures.

Talking to GPlus, Dipika Choudhury, Inspector of Schools, Kamrup (Metro), said, "We are planning to change the school timings from the first week of June. The new schedule will be from 7:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m."

In addition to the upcoming schedule change, the Elementary Education Department of Kamrup Metropolitan District issued a directive on May 23, mandating schools to implement several measures to combat the heat. Schools are now required to ring a "water bell" three times a day to remind students to stay hydrated. Moreover, schools must conduct morning assemblies indoors, either in classrooms or in the school verandas, instead of in open spaces or fields.

The directive aims to ensure students drink ample water and avoid heat-related health issues, such as sweating, headaches, and other ailments. The order from the Inspector of Schools, Kamrup Metro, addressed to headmasters of all schools, emphasised the importance of these measures.

The order read, "Given the excessive heat wave we have been experiencing since last week, it is crucial to take preventive measures to protect students from potential health problems. Therefore, you are requested to ring the water bell thrice every day during school hours to ensure that every student drinks sufficient water and stays hydrated. Additionally, you are asked to arrange the morning assembly inside the classroom or in the school veranda rather than in open spaces or fields."
