Guwahati Gyaan: Christ Church - Oldest Church Of Northeast India

Let’s delve into the fascinating history of the oldest church in Guwahati – Christ Church located in Pan Bazar, which boasts over 175 years of rich heritage. Constructed in 1844 and consecrated in 1850, this historic church played a crucial role in popularising Christianity when its awareness was limited.

Nestled in the heart of Guwahati, the church stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of Christianity, inviting both believers and history enthusiasts to explore its captivating journey through time. The imposing structure, featuring a large square tower and porch, faced extensive damage in the 1856 earthquake. However, it underwent a complete renovation by 1861, only to face collapse again in the Great Assam Earthquake of 1897.

In the 1920s, with the British exploring tea cultivation in Assam, the region witnessed an influx of businessmen and planters. This, in turn, led to the establishment of Christianity, influenced by the East India Company's presence after the Treaty of Yandaboo in 1826, necessitating the need for a religious institution.

The seeds for the church were sown in 1839 when the Bishop of Calcutta urged action for baptism and marriage services. This prompted the planning of a church under the guidance of Rev. A. Garstin. In 1844, Rev. R. J. Bland became Assam's first chaplain and a committee led by Major Francis Jenkins initiated the construction of Christ Church in 1844. The foundation was laid in May 1844, and the inaugural prayer took place on October 26, 1845. The consecration ceremony occurred on August 23, 1850, conducted by Rt. Rev. Daniel Wilson.

The original church was replaced by a small "Assam-type" structure financed by public donations in 1903. The diocese of Assam was established in 1915, and Rev. H.P. Walsh became its first bishop. The church, now under the diocese, underwent renovations in 1978, dedicated by Bishop Rev DD Pradhan on March 26, 1978. During World War II, the church served the Allied Forces. In 1955, a significant portion of its land was transferred to the Assam government for Nehru Park. In 2017, Christ Church underwent a major facelift, dedicated by Reverend Michael Herenz, Bishop of the Diocese of Northeast India.
