GUWAHATI: A man was arrested by the Bhangagarh Police Station for entering the premises of Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) with a fake identity card.

The man visited the Surgical Department at GMCH to check on a patient. He was carrying an identity card that stated him as Pranab Jyoti Das, Assistant Professor of the Neurosurgery Department on it.

Speaking to the media, the attendant at the hospital said, "He showed me his identity card but since I didn't know how to verify it, I did not. He reeked of alcohol and when I asked the nurse about him, she couldn't recognise him either. I felt suspicious when he tried to leave and I immediately locked him inside the room, and called the security guards. They took him to the Incharge of the Emergency room. She could not verify the identity card, and took him to the Superintendent of GMCH."

Achyut Baishya, the Principal of GMCH examined the identity card and found it to be fake. The principal termed him as a fraudster and the Bhangagarh Police was informed. He was then taken by the police for questioning.

Speaking to G Plus the Officer-in-Charge of Bhangagarh Police Station said, "The man is a native of Gauripur, and stays in a rented house in Guwahati.  According to him, he is associated with some medical company.  We called his family members, they will arrive soon. The interrogation is going on. The GMCH authorities will soon lodge an FIR against the person."

The OC further added that, according to the man, he had come to visit a patient, and entered the surgical department by mistake. The police officials on the other hand suspect that he had an ill intention.

The man is currently in police custody. Further details are awaited.
