GUWAHATI: Navanil Barua, a senior physician at GNRC Hospitals in Guwahati, has been cleared of all charges in connection with the notorious Dispur hit-and-run case that sent shockwaves through the city in 2021, as per reports on September 7.
This exoneration comes in the wake of a verdict by the Kamrup district sessions judge, who deemed the accusations against him unfounded and without merit. The incident in question dates back to November 2021 when Dispur police filed a charge sheet in court following a hit-and-run accident.
It was alleged that the individual Rajkanya Baruah, allegedly under the influence of alcohol, had struck nine labourers beneath an under-construction flyover on the night of October 1. Initially, Navanil Barua was arrested by Dispur police on suspicions of aiding the accused model. He was accused of issuing a purportedly 'false' medical report and admitting her to the hospital's ICU.
Initially, Barua claimed to be unfamiliar with Rajkanya Baruah, but their WhatsApp conversations contradicted this statement. He further contended that Rajkanya had threatened to take her own life in the hospital unless he admitted her to the ICU, reports stated.
This case took a legal turn when Rajkanya Baruah was remanded to 14-day judicial custody by the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) court. However, in a subsequent twist, she was granted bail by the Gauhati High Court in March 2022.
