GUWAHATI: The Crime Branch in Guwahati apprehended Nitul Das, a senior assistant at the Sub-Registrar’s office at the office of the District Commissioner of Kamrup (Metro), following a raid at his Kharghuli residence on Thursday.
The arrest came as part of an ongoing investigation into a fraudulent land registration scandal that sent shockwaves through the administrative circles in Guwahati.
The raid, conducted by the Crime Branch, unearthed several incriminating documents at Nitul Das's residence.
Approximately ₹2.5 lakh in cash, along with various land-related documents, fake seals, a TI book, and a volume registration book were seized during the operation.
The arrest followed a complaint filed with the cyber cell, which brought to light the intricate web of fraud orchestrated by Nitul Das.
The senior Assistant Registrar allegedly exploited online platforms to deceive unsuspecting victims, manipulating land records and registrations for personal gains.
The seized documents and evidence suggest that Nitul Das played a key role in registering land in the name of individuals who were not the actual owners, reports stated.
Interestingly, this arrest is not an isolated incident in the ongoing investigation. Earlier, a DTP operator at the DC office, identified as Dhrubajyoti Barman, was also apprehended in connection with the same case, as per reports.
The arrest of advocate Mainul Hoque had preceded these arrests, indicating the intricate network of individuals involved in the fraudulent activities.
Assam Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, stated on X, “A huge racket involving the production of counterfeit land documents has been uncovered by the @GuwahatiPol today. After questioning an employee from the Sub-Registrar office in Guwahati and an advocate, the police obtained crucial information and conducted a raid at a location in Kharghuli. During the raid, various items such as volume registers, thumb impression books, fake official stamps, laptops, land records, and stamp papers were discovered. These items were being used to create fraudulent historical land records. The search is currently ongoing”.
