Guwahati's bus service is in dire need of an immediate revamp due to escalating issues that significantly impact the daily lives of its residents. The current system is marred by congested routes, inadequate infrastructure, and a severe shortage of buses.
Commuters face constant challenges, with unsafe walking conditions, limited public transport options, and the resulting reliance on private vehicles contributing to congestion and pollution. As traffic congestion intensifies on Guwahati's roads, a critical reassessment of Kamrup (M) Transport's approach to promoting buses as a primary public transportation mode becomes imperative.
Speaking to GPlus, Shreya Gadepalli, a national Urban Mobility expert pointed out the urgent need for a comprehensive overhaul.
According to Gadepalli, "Guwahati faces a multitude of challenges, including perilously limited walking spaces due to the absence of continuous footpaths and the lack of tree shade. The situation is exacerbated by the dearth of proper public transport, forcing residents to rely on shared auto-rickshaws or their own vehicles, contributing to citywide congestion and heightened pollution levels."
Gadepalli emphasised the pivotal role of robust public transport in alleviating these issues, stressing the importance of modernising the aging bus fleet. Advocating for dedicated bus lanes and junctions, she insisted that the key to an effective system lies in "fantastic buses" equipped with air conditioning and amenities to reduce crowding.
As the Assam Government plans an Urban Planning Conclave for the North East, scheduled for December 8 and 9, the urgency for addressing Guwahati's transit woes takes centre stage. Gadepalli's call for action echoes the need for strategic planning and investments to transform the city's public transportation into a model of efficiency and comfort.
