GMC's Garbage Collection Still Not Segregated

GUWAHATI: The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) launched a new solid waste management system covering 10 wards in Phase 1 of its initiative, in December 2024. The system aimed to involve both the citizens and the GMC in effective waste management.

The new system included waste to be segregated into two categories – DRY and WET. Wet waste includes biodegradable materials like food, leaves, flowers, and garden trimmings etc.; while dry waste encompasses non-biodegradable items such as rubber, paper, metal, plastic, footwear, sanitary napkins, and diapers.

However, the segregation of garbage at source despite many efforts by the GMC was never successful. Pramod Kalita, an ornithologist, shared a video questioning whether waste segregation is actually being effectively carried out, thus raising doubts about the efficacy of the process.

Taking to X, Pramod Kalita, an ornithologist posted a video where he shared, "Is this a segregated waste?

@gmc_guwahati, when will the drama of scientific waste Management process end ?

Talking to GPlus, Nilima Das from Beltola said, "Although we have spotted GMC segregation vehicles in and around Guwahati, we have not seen workers actually sorting out the waste. Enforcing waste segregation rules is tough, especially when some people keep littering without facing any consequences."

Rahul Sharma from Chandmari talking to GPlus said, "We have been waiting for proper waste segregation in our area, but it's disappointing to see no real action being taken. The presence of segregation vehicles doesn't translate into actual waste sorting on the ground."

Talking to GPlus, Sunita Devi, another resident of Zoo Road said, "Despite the assurances from authorities, there's still no segregation of waste happening in our locality. It's frustrating to witness the lack of progress in implementing such a crucial aspect of waste management."
