Gauhati High Court Judge To Investigate Activities Of Meitei Extremist Organisations In Manipur

GUWAHATI: The Ministry of Home Affairs has taken a step in addressing security concerns by constituting the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Tribunal to investigate the activities of Meitei Extremist Organisations operating in Manipur.

In an official announcement, the Ministry revealed that Justice Sanjay Kumar Medhi, a distinguished Judge of the Gauhati High Court, will preside over the Tribunal.

The primary objective of this judicial body is to thoroughly examine and adjudicate whether there is sufficient cause to declare several Meitei Extremist Organisations as 'Unlawful Associations.'

The organisations under scrutiny include the Peoples' Liberation Army (PLA) and its political wing, the Revolutionary Peoples' Front (RPF), the United National Liberation Front (UNLF) and its armed wing, the Manipur Peoples' Army (MPA), the Peoples' Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (PREPAK) and its armed wing known as the "Red Army," the Kangleipak Communist Party (KCP) and its armed wing, also referred to as the "Red Army," the Kanglei Yaol Kanba Lup (KYKL), the Coordination Committee (CorCom), and the Alliance for Socialist Unity Kangleipak (ASUK), along with all their factions, wings, and front organisations.

The decision is reportedly being undertaken to address security challenges and maintaining law and order in the region.

Meitei Extremist Organisations have been a cause for concern due to their alleged involvement in various unlawful activities, including insurgency and acts of violence.

According to reports, the Tribunal will examine evidence and arguments presented by both the government and the organisations in question to determine whether they should be officially designated as 'Unlawful Associations.'
