Carter, who served as the 39th president of the United States from 1977 to 1981, faced challenges during his presidency, including the Iran hostage crisis and the oil crisis. After leaving office, he became a respected international figure, founding The Carter Center in 1982. His humanitarian work earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002, recognising his efforts to promote human rights and social justice.
The longest-lived U.S. president, Carter had been battling health issues for several years, including brain cancer, which he publicly disclosed in 2015. Tributes to his legacy poured in from global leaders, including Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, former U.S. presidents Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Barack Obama, and Donald Trump, as well as current President Joe Biden, all praising his commitment to peace and humanitarian causes.
Carter is survived by his four children- three sons and a daughter, and his late wife, Rosalynn, who passed away in November 2023 at the age of 96.
