GUWAHATI: On November 16, the police detained a former principal of the Barkanda People's Academy Higher Secondary School in  Bilasipara of Dhubri district in Assam, on suspicion of helping examinees of the Assam State Open School Examination to cheat during the exam.

According to reports, hundreds of examinees showed up at the examination centre for the exam, and all of them reportedly used their mobile phones to write the test.

The Police were made aware that some individuals were assisting the candidates in taking the test illegally.

As per reports, hundreds of examinees were appearing in the exam at the examination centre and allegedly all the candidates were taking the help of their mobile phones in order to write the exam.

The Police were informed that certain people were helping the candidates to write the examination using illicit means. Based on this information, the Nayahat Police and a Senior Police official stormed the examination centre and detained seventeen examinees for interrogation.

The examinees' cell phones contained incriminating information about the examination, and based on this evidence, the police detained the former principal of the Barkanda People's Academy Higher Secondary School and his son for further interrogation.

A police official from the Nayahat Police Outpost stated, "We were informed that the examinees were refusing to enter the Examination Centre without their mobile phones. Upon investigation, we discovered that examinees were members of a WhatsApp group where the former principal and his son provided them with the question papers and answers before the exam day. We have detained both of them and have also filed an FIR in this matter."
