Flood Free Guwahati This Monsoon, Dreams Singhal

GUWAHATI: After a year of planning, every year during monsoon Guwahati gets inundated along with the plans that the administration chalks out. For this year too, a meeting was held by Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Ashok Singhal which came up with a dream plan to mitigate flood in the city.

The meeting as a part of the Flood Free Guwahati Mission (Mission Flood Free) saw the participation of senior officials from various sectors, including Railways, Oil India, National Highways Authority of India, as well as water resources and public works departments, and the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC).

During the session, directives were issued for the consistent cleaning of drains in the Jorabat and Baragaon areas along national highways, along with artificial flood-prone zones within the city. The district administration has been urged to address illegal encroachments along the Bahini, Bharlu, Lakhimijan, and Mara Bharlu rivers.

Additionally, the Commissioner-Secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Affairs and the commissioner of Kamrup (City) district have been directed to ensure that artificial flooding issues are effectively managed ahead of the upcoming monsoon season.

Additionally, a bi-weekly review meeting has been mandated for Mission Flood Free to monitor progress and address challenges promptly.
