GUWAHATI: Five newly elected Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) in Assam are set to be sworn in on Friday, November 29. The ceremony, scheduled for 4 pm, will take place at the Assam Legislative Assembly, with Speaker Biswajit Daimary administering the oath.

Among the new legislators, three represent the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), while the other two are from its allies – the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL). The MLAs to take the oath are BJP’s Diganta Ghatowar (Behali), Diplu Ranjan Sarmah (Samaguri), and Nihar Ranjan Das (Dholai); AGP’s Diptimayee Choudhury (Bongaigaon); and UPPL’s Nirmal Kumar Brahma (Sidli).
The recently concluded bypolls saw the BJP and its allies making significant gains, while the Congress failed to secure a single seat. Notably, BJP’s Diganta Ghatowar emerged victorious in Behali with 50,947 votes, defeating Congress’ Jayanta Borah by 9,051 votes. Meanwhile, in Sidli, UPPL’s Nirmal Kumar Brahma claimed a resounding victory with a margin exceeding 37,000 votes, securing 95,243 votes against his closest rival, Suddho Kumar Basumatary of the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF).
In Bongaigaon, AGP’s Diptimayee Choudhury defeated Congress’ Brajenjit Singha, securing 74,734 votes. Diplu Ranjan Sarmah of the BJP won in Samaguri, overtaking Congress leader Rakibul Hussain’s son, Tanzil Hussain, by a margin of over 22,000 votes.
Similarly, BJP’s Nihar Ranjan Das won the Dholai seat, defeating Congress candidate Dhrubajyoti Purkayastha by over 9,000 votes.
