Finding Maini: An Assamese Film On Quest

GUWAHATI: “Finding Maini” is a new genre Assamese movie directed by Bijon Bikash Brahma, and produced by Kushal Kumar Brahma. The movie is of less than 90 minutes, and covers events in Guwahati of just over half a day.

Maini, portrayed by Darathi Bharadwaj, unintentionally leaves her home with a bag, that contains “stuff”, enroute the Airport. Her brother, essayed by Dipankar Kalita, and his side-kicks want to stop her from being caught with the “stuff” by the security personnel at the Airport.

Unfortunately for him and his team, his sister becomes unreachable because of mobile network issues. So they go to her school, and then to a Bar in search of her.

Unanticipated funny incidents take place in the process, before they decide to proceed to the airport, first in two wheelers and then in a car.

In between, they also enjoy drinks and smoke. The movie is shot in roads, lanes and by-lanes of Guwahati, and those who are aware about the city would be well versed of whatever the frames capture.

The film-makers have tried to make a comedy film in a genre normal in Hollywood. The film is targeted at today’s teenagers and the youth, as is clear from the end-product.

The Director must be lauded for not making it too loud, and keep it as subtle as possible. Perhaps, this is the first time an attempt of this nature has been made in Assamese films.

However, there are gaps in this, apart from being a fresh Assamese film. The direction could have been better. The shortcomings in editing could also be noticed.

Else, it could have been a more compact product. The music by Harjeet Diaz is apt for such a movie.

Though laudable, the cinematography could have been better, specially the rides in two-wheelers in the lanes and bye-lanes of Guwahati. The writer Kishalay Malla has done a commendable job indeed.
