GUWAHATI: Tony Todd, the legendary actor best known for his portrayal of the hook-wielding villain in ‘Candyman’, has passed away at his home in Los Angeles aged 69, following a prolonged illness. His wife, Fatima, confirmed the media on Friday, November 8.

Born in Washington, DC, in 1954, Todd’s impressive career spanned nearly four decades and included over 200 film and television credits. He first appeared on the silver screen in 1986’s ‘Sleepwalk’, but it was his role as the haunting spirit in 1992’s ‘Candyman’ that truly solidified his place in horror history. Todd reprised this role in ‘Candyman: Farewell to the Flesh’ in 1995, and made a cameo in the 2021 reboot, which introduced a new generation of audiences to the terrifying legend.
Aside from ‘Candyman’, Todd is widely remembered for playing mortician William Bludworth in the ‘Final Destination’ series and starring in ‘Night of the Living Dead’, ‘The Crow’, ‘The Rock’, ‘Hatchet’, and ‘The Man from Earth’. His range extended beyond horror, with credits in blockbuster films, including 2015’s ‘Frankenstein’ and 2024’s ‘The Bunker’, and he remained active, with over nine projects reportedly in post-production at the time of his passing.
On television, Todd made numerous appearances in iconic series, including ‘24’, ‘The X-Files’, ‘Homicide: Life on the Street’, ‘Law & Order’, and ‘Beverly Hills 90210’. His multiple roles in ‘Star Trek’, particularly as Kurn, brother of Worf, in ‘The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine’, garnered a devoted following. He also lent his distinct voice to popular video games like ‘Call of Duty’ and ‘Half-Life’, as well as portraying characters in ‘Spider-Man 2’ and ‘Transformers: Rise of the Fallen’.
