One of the Northeast’s biggest musical and cultural extravaganzas, the Me’gong Festival, is set to return this year with an even bigger celebration. Held in the picturesque Garo Hills of Meghalaya, the festival promises to blend the rich traditions of Garo culture with the best of global music, offering an unforgettable experience for music lovers from around the world.
Scheduled for November 29 and 30 at the Baljek Airport in West Garo Hills, near Tura, the Me’gong Festival continues its mission to promote tourism in the region by drawing music and nature enthusiasts from across India and the globe. This year’s festival will be no different, with a stellar lineup that includes the legendary international rock band EUROPE along with popular national artists like Euphoria, Gajendra Verma, Indus Creed, Udita Goswami, and Shamka Tribe.
A special stage will also be dedicated to showcasing the local musical talents of Garo Hills, giving the spectators an authentic taste of the region’s cultural vibrancy.
Previous editions have seen remarkable success, with the 2022 festival drawing over 2.6 lakh attendees for performances by international bands MLTR and BIG MOUNTAIN. Last year, over 3 lakh people attended the event, headlined by Vengaboyz and Armaan Malik.
What sets Me’gong Festival apart is its unique venue—a dormant airport with a 1.3 km tarmac strip, which accommodates thousands of festivalgoers comfortably, ensuring a smooth experience despite the massive crowd. The airport campus is fully dedicated to the event, allowing for easy access and making it one of the most impressive venues for music festivals in the region. Ticket prices are kept affordable to ensure the festival remains accessible to all.
This year’s edition, titled “Echoes of Tradition”, will not only showcase world-class music but also the rich cultural heritage of the Garo tribe. Traditional Garo dance forms, local brews, Garo cuisine, traditional sports, and many aspects of Garo life will be on display, offering visitors a deep dive into the community’s vibrant heritage.
