The Moran community living in Arunachal Pradesh can breathe easy for now after the Assam cabinet on Thursday, March 20 decided to issue them Permanent Residence Certificate (PRC). This will help them get employment and educational benefits among others in Assam. The community has been raising the demand for PRC with the Arunachal Pradesh government for a long time but to no avail. Revealing the cabinet’s decision, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said due to various reasons, the Arunachal Pradesh government has not been able to issue PRCs to the community which has now been done by Assam.

However, the initiative though welcomed by the Moran community is not a permanent resolution of the issue faced by them. While members of the community may get employment and other benefits in Assam on the strength of the PRCs to be provided by the state government, it is Arunachal Pradesh which has to look after their socio economic development and address the issue of their political right. The Assam government can help in this regard by convincing the neighbouring state. Advantage must be taken of the fact that both the states are ruled by the same political party.
