Editorial | Debate Raises Over Working Hours

Employees in government or private offices work every day for their living and the employers are at times happy and at times unhappy with their performances. In some offices, employees work for eight hours, some for 12 hours and in some offices 10 hours. There are professions where employees have to be 24/7 available and active. The police are always working overtime, and same goes for many drivers. In many offices, the top bosses like the MDs and the CEOs are also 24/7 available. Imagine how long the Prime Minster and Assam’s chief minster works every day.

After Larsen & Toubro Chairman SN Subrahmanyan’s viral video in social media ignited a controversy of working 90 hours a week, people have started discussing how long one should work. Many Rapido riders in Guwahati work for 12 to 15 hours because if they work more, they will earn more. Many doctors work for long hours in their hospitals and how the medical workers worked during Covid 19 is an example of working long hours. But what should be the idle duration of working remains a question. According to labour law adults in India should not work more than 9 hours but corporate honchos want people should work more and many professionals are working more than 9 hours.

Actually, no matter how long people work every day, the employees should be justifying the salary they are earning and meeting the expectation of the organisation they are associated with.
