This day signals the start of Devi Paksha, the fortnight dedicated to the goddess Durga, and is considered a spiritual gateway to the grand Durga Puja festivities.

In the early morning hours, homes and local establishments echo with the timeless recitation of 'Mahishasura Mardini', as its soulful chants narrate the goddess's triumph over the demon king Mahishasura. A significant ritual also occurs where people gather at riverbanks to pray for their ancestors.

With Mahalaya, the inaugurations for Durga Puja enter into an active phase, as artisans across Guwahati become busy giving their final touches to the idols of the goddess and her children. The vibrant, artistic pandals which host these idols reach close to completion, with organisers often attempting to create mesmerizing themes that enarmor the hearts of visitors.

Mahalaya marks the true beginning of the festive season. As the countdown to Durga Puja begins, most regions of eastern India turn abuzz with anticipation. This year's celebration in Assam and beyond is expected to draw massive crowds, both locals and tourists alike.
