In a moment that many thought might never arrive, Mickey Mouse, the enduring symbol of American pop culture, is poised to step into the public domain as the clock turns to 2024. Marking a historic shift, the 1928 short film "Steamboat Willie," featuring Mickey and Minnie Mouse, will soon be freed from Disney's copyright, becoming accessible for public use.

U.S. copyright law, expanded several times during Mickey's lifetime, allows for a copyright to be held for 95 years. As the copyright for "Steamboat Willie" expires, a version of Mickey Mouse will be liberated, opening up new possibilities for artists and creators. However, it's important to note that this only applies to the mischievous, rat-like, non-speaking boat captain version of Mickey as portrayed in the original film.

In response to this milestone, a Disney spokesperson emphasised, "Ever since Mickey Mouse’s first appearance in the 1928 short film Steamboat Willie, people have associated the character with Disney’s stories, experiences, and authentic products. That will not change when the copyright in the Steamboat Willie film expires."

While the mischievous Mickey from "Steamboat Willie" enters the public domain, Disney assures that more modern versions of the character will remain unaffected. Mickey will continue to play a leading role as a global ambassador for the Walt Disney Company, gracing storytelling, theme park attractions, and merchandise with his timeless charm.
