Death Toll In Assam Floods Rises To 66; 129 Animals Dead In Kaziranga

 

GUWAHATI: The floods in Assam claimed eight more lives on Sunday, taking the death toll to 66. The recent fatalities occurred in Cachar, Dhubri, Goalpara, Nalbari, Dhemaji, and Sivasagar districts.

According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) on July 7, 28 out of the state's 35 districts are still inundated, impacting 22,74,289 people across 3,446 villages. 

The floods have caused extensive damage to agriculture, submerging over 68,432.75 hectares of cropland, and have severely damaged roads, bridges, and river embankments in several districts.

Currently, 269 relief camps have been established, providing shelter to 53,689 affected individuals.

Ten rivers, including the Brahmaputra and Barak, are flowing above the danger level, worsening the situation. National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams, along with the State Disaster Response Force, police, and other agencies, have been deployed in several districts for rescue and relief operations.

In Kaziranga National Park & Tiger Reserve, 68 out of 233 camps are submerged, affecting wildlife significantly. To date, 129 animals, including rhinos and hog deer, have perished, while 96 animals have been rescued by authorities.
