Crime Branch Recovers Seven Cars Stolen from Self Drive Car Rentals

GUWAHATI: Do you own a self drive car rental agency? If so, beware whom you are renting your cars to. The Crime Branch of Assam Police has recovered as many as seven stolen vehicles. 


The incident came to light when Abinash Kalita and Samarjyoti Kalita of Mathgharia, Assam lodged an FIR on 12th February last complaining about a missing car. The customer, Sanjib Medhi, took the vehicle bearing registration  no. AS 01 DL 5655 (i20 sports) on rent per day basis on November 11.


However, the person was untraceable since January 20, without paying the rent. 


The culprit named Sanjib Medhi of 4 No. Bartala Nalbari, reportedly rents cars from various self drive car rental agencies across Guwahati, and either sells them off or mortgages them in lieu of hefty sums of money. Later on it was discovered that the said fraudster took as many seven vehicles from various self drive agencies, impersonating as a customer and stealing cars from rental agencies. 


In this regard a case was registered at the Crime Branch PS vide CBPS no. 5/2021 u/s 419/420/406 of the IPC.


With the assistance of inbuilt GPS fitted in the vehicles it was learnt that the vehicles were in Mukulmua Police station area.


All the seven vehicles were recovered by a team of Crime Branch, Guwahati with the assistance of Mukulmua PS and seized. The FIR named accused is absconding till now. Efforts are on to nab him.
