GUWAHATI: AstraZeneca, the UK-based pharma company that developed the Covishield vaccine, has initiated the worldwide withdrawal of its vaccine, as per reports.

The company has attributed the withdrawal to the over-availability of updated vaccines since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and reportedly said, "As multiple, variant COVID-19 vaccines have since been developed there is a surplus of available updated vaccines."

This follows the massive controversy that ignited last week after AstraZeneca admitted to a court in the UK that the Covishield vaccine causes various rare side-effects such as blood clots and low blood platelet counts.
