GUWAHATI: A heated controversy has emerged in Rupahi over allegations of beef being openly sold in several hotels at the Wednesday market. Accusations have also surfaced claiming that some government officials are collecting unauthorised fees from the market while operating outside their official duties.
The activity is reportedly taking place under the jurisdiction of the Rupahi Regional Panchayat, which is being accused of running the beef market without implementing any restrictions or oversight. Eyewitnesses and locals have alleged that both the sale and fee collection occur openly, raising questions about legality and ethical governance.
Video reports on media and social media show police authorities throughly checking the premises and kitchens of local hotels and restaurants for any traces of beef sale or consumption in public.
Local residents have voiced concerns over the unchecked operations. As of now, neither the Rupahi Panchayat nor the district administration have reportedly issued an official statement addressing the allegations.
This comes in response to the Assam cabinet on December 4 announcing a ban on serving and consumption of beef in restaurants, hotels, and public places across the state expanding its scope. Earlier, the ban was restricted to a radius of five kilometre of temples
